Privacy
Nothing here remembers you.
Golden has no account, no database and no cookies, and it writes nothing to your browser’s storage. The times are calculated from the sun’s position rather than looked up, so nothing you do on the page has to be sent anywhere to get an answer.
Your location
Golden asks for your location only when you press “Use my location”, and your browser asks you first. It asks for a coarse reading rather than GPS, because the only thing it is used for is picking the nearest town on our list. That happens in your browser, and the coordinates are dropped straight after. They are never sent to us, never put in a link and never counted.
The share link
Share puts the town, the date and the time of day into the address itself, so anyone with the link sees the same moment. Nothing is stored at our end.
Saving to a calendar
A saved golden hour or week is a calendar file built in your browser and handed straight to you. Subscribing is different: your calendar app fetches /[town]/feed.ics from us every so often to pick up new times. That request tells us which town’s feed was fetched and nothing else. It usually comes from your calendar provider’s servers rather than from you, so their privacy terms cover that side of it.
On somebody else’s page
An embedded Golden is still served by us, inside a frame. The page around it cannot see into the frame, and the frame does not ask for your location. The site you are on has its own privacy policy for everything outside it.
Measurement
Counted, not watched.
Golden counts visits with Vercel Web Analytics. It sets no cookies and no storage of any kind, and it has no identifier for you: a visit is counted against a hash of the request that is thrown away within the day, so we cannot tell a returning visitor from a new one, and we cannot follow anyone between our tools.
The address is trimmed before it is reported. The date and time in a share link never arrive; the path does, and on a town’s own page that names the town. Beyond visits it counts which actions happen: a town changed, the valley dragged, the year dragged, a calendar saved or subscribed to, a link shared, the times copied, the location button pressed, and a page that crashed. The town goes with the ones where it matters, and a town is always one from our own list, never a position. Pressing the location button is counted as a press; your coordinates are not part of it and never leave the page.
Your IP address reaches Vercel, who host Golden, as part of any request to any website - including the request for a calendar feed - and is used for the approximate country in the visit count. We do not store it.
Golden is made by Digitopia Design Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, number 12037302, registered office 124 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, trading as Digitopia Labs. Our ICO registration is ZC160761.
We count visits on the basis of our legitimate interest in knowing which parts of the tool get used. The counting is done by Vercel, so it goes no further than the company already serving you the page. Vercel is a US company, so that processing happens outside the UK under the standard contractual clauses in their data processing terms.
You can ask for a copy of anything held about you (which should be nothing), ask for it to be erased, or object to the counting altogether, at hello@digitopiadesign.com. If you think we have got something on this page wrong, you can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
