This tool uses the interval when the sun is between 6 and 4 degrees below the horizon. Morning blue hour begins at civil dawn; evening blue hour ends at civil dusk.
Will I actually see the sun at these times?
Sunrise and sunset use the standard -0.833 degree solar altitude threshold, which allows for refraction and the width of the sun. Buildings, terrain and atmospheric conditions affect what you see. The cut-paper hills are decorative and can obscure the illustrated sun before the calculated event.
What happens when the sun does not rise or set?
Missing crossings are shown as dashes, not invented times. At high latitudes, a golden or twilight window may not have both boundaries on a given day. Calendar downloads are available only for complete windows.
How accurate are the times?
Within a minute of published almanac values. The engine is checked against the US Naval Observatory at both solstices and both equinoxes for London, at midsummer for Lerwick, and in both directions for a southern-hemisphere town. Times are for the town centre; hills and buildings shift what you actually see.
