Sunrise, sunset and golden hour · Sydney

Sydney sunrise and sunset times

The sun rises in Sydney at 05:48 and sets at 17:50, giving 12h 02m of daylight. Solar noon is at 11:49, when the sun reaches 55.0 degrees above the horizon.

The morning golden window runs from 05:48 to 06:21, and the evening one from 17:17 to 17:50. That is about 64 minutes of low, warm light across the day. Before the morning window and after the evening one, the blue hour runs from civil dawn at 05:23 and to civil dusk at 18:15.

The sun comes up in the east, at 89 degrees clockwise from true north, and goes down in the west at 271 degrees.

Sunset is 1 minute later than yesterday, and 21 minutes later than it was thirty days ago.

The valley above is an illustration rather than local terrain. The times are calculated; the picture is not a forecast, and cloud is not included.

When is golden hour?

Here, the golden window runs from sunrise to a solar altitude of 6 degrees in the morning, and back down to sunset in the evening. Its length changes with your location and the season. It is not necessarily an hour.

What is blue hour?

This tool uses the interval when the sun is between 6 and 4 degrees below the horizon. Morning blue hour begins at civil dawn; evening blue hour ends at civil dusk.

Will I actually see the sun at these times?

Sunrise and sunset use the standard -0.833 degree solar altitude threshold, which allows for refraction and the width of the sun. Buildings, terrain and atmospheric conditions affect what you see. The cut-paper hills are decorative and can obscure the illustrated sun before the calculated event.

What happens when the sun does not rise or set?

Missing crossings are shown as dashes, not invented times. At high latitudes, a golden or twilight window may not have both boundaries on a given day. Calendar downloads are available only for complete windows.

How accurate are the times?

Within a minute of published almanac values. The engine is checked against the US Naval Observatory at both solstices and both equinoxes for London, at midsummer for Lerwick, and in both directions for a southern-hemisphere town. Times are for the town centre; hills and buildings shift what you actually see.
